This article is balm for my soul! I'm actually doing better with my illustration work this year than I have in any of the past years when I was still more design focused. I thought getting more illustration work would be as much of a struggle as I had as a freelance designer, but so far, illustration seems to be going pretty welI, despite (or maybe because of?) AI. And a lot of customers are explicitly saying no to AI as well, which would point to there being some truth to what you're saying.
Great article. I’ve read another article I think on Substack somewhere stating the same. Though I never really worried about AI, it’s comforting to know that industry professionals are seeing an increase in the use and appreciation of human art.
As a writer whose working on a children's book, amongst other projects, I am not interested in adding AI created images to something I've put my heart into. I want the book to bring a unique delight that only a creative illustrator can do.
Ooh Vicki, this was very well written! Totally agree that it’s an acceleration time for creatives and I see it also as a super nice opportunity to just simply experiment and push our art through the boundaries of “perfection”
I think most of us can appreciate the high price paid for a handmade garment versus what you’d pay for a mass produced t-shirt. So maybe we can start seeing ourselves in the former camp and not try to compete with the latter.
OK I'm sold! Your words are going to be the wind in my sails not to brush off my dream to illustrate for people. Let's go! 🙏
